What would cause me to recieve bounced messages that I did not send?

I recieve about 25 messages a day saying "message could not be sent, User unknown" etc... I have contacted my provider, only to not get a reply. I have run AVG, Avast!, Zone Alarm, Panda, Stop Sign, and Mcafee antivirus and they say I am clean. I have turned my computer off for a week and still recieve messages that I suposingly sent (while the computer is off??)

My next actions are:

Change my email address and re-install Windows XP...

Anyone have any suggestions?

Some spammers use bogus bounce messages to send their spam in an attempt to bypass spam filtering.

You haven't been hacked nor do you have a virus or spyware. About the only thing that you can do is to change your e-mail address. However the spammers will eventually find you again so this is only a temporary fix.

See the following post and my response for a more detailed explanation of what is going on.

You didn't send anything. It's just a slightly different type of spam. Ignore it. There's not a lot you can do to stop it.

The same thing happen to me and they stole my password
re format the pc that sould help and remember to disconet your pc from the net in the night
When you get returned e-mail that you didn鈥檛 send, then someone you know may have a virus. The virus is sending messages to everyone in their address book. The virus is also using the caller鈥檚 address, which is also found in the caller鈥檚 address book, as a return address, making the virus hard to trace.

If this happens to you, DO NOT open the attachments on the returned e-mails鈥攖hey will be infected with the virus.
They cracked into someone else's address book where you are listed and are using that address book to send spam.
have your service provider change your ip address, then run with a firewall(pandas best)for the first few weeks.
